Cancer screening has helped saved hundreds of thousands of lives. But “millions of people in the US who should be screened aren’t getting screened, and millions who are being screened aren’t receiving the highest quality testing available,” said Robert A. Smith, PhD. Narrowing these gaps could allow screening to save even more lives.

An expert panel on exercise and cancer found such strong evidence that physical activity can help some cancer survivors live longer that they created new exercise guidelines for cancer survivors. They also developed new programs to help ensure that healthcare and fitness professionals can use those guidelines to help make exercise a standard part of cancer treatment. The panel also found evidence that exercise can help prevent some cancers.

If people didn’t smoke, ate less meat and more fruits and vegetables, exercised more, and followed cancer screening guidelines, the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates its new challenge goal of reducing cancer death rates by 40% by 2035 could be achieved.
