What Keeps Me Going

I am greatly inspired by researchers who are dedicated to saving lives and helping alleviate the suffering of cancer survivors and their families. Whether through groundbreaking discoveries or addressing the needs of marginalized populations, these researchers are making a significantly positive impact on the cancer burden in the United States. I aspire to contribute to this cause by conducting research that can help to save the lives of cancer survivors and reduce the burden that cancer inflicts upon the world."

At ACS since 2023

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention, and Survivorship, Shamim Shahi, PhD, MS, works on breast cancer etiology and survivorship under the mentorship of Lauren Teras, PhD, and Clara Bodelon, PhD, in Population Science at the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Using her background in Molecular Biology and Epidemiology, Shahi investigates the association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and breast cancer incidence and the association between the cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) genotype and breast cancer survival.

Research focus and accomplishments

Shahi's interests include:

  • Research projects related to the link between health disparities and environmental, genetic, and molecular epidemiology
  • Health disparities research focusing on people with disabilities, low socioeconomic groups, LGBT populations, and residents of rural or geographically isolated areas
Before joining the ACS, Shahi led several projects related to gender differences in breast cancer treatment refusal and survival using the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and data about cuff size variation from home blood pressure devices in the United States.
