Nutrition and Physical Activity Guideline for Cancer Survivors

Cancer survivors are often highly motivated to seek information about food choices, physical activity, and dietary supplements to improve their treatment outcomes, quality of life, and overall survival. This report summarizes the evaluation of the scientific evidence and best clinical practices by a group of experts in nutrition, physical activity, and cancer survivorship.

American Cancer Society (ACS) Nutrition and Physical Activity Guideline for Cancer Survivors (2022)

The purpose of this guideline is to provide evidence-based, cancer-specific recommendations for anthropometric parameters, physical activity, diet, and alcohol intake for reducing recurrence and cancer-specific and overall mortality. The guideline is intended to serve as a resource for informing ACS programs, health policy, and the media. Included are nutrition and physical activity recommendations during the continuum of cancer care, focusing largely on the needs of  people with cancer during and after treatment, including those who are disease free or who have stable disease following their recovery from treatment.

For Your Patients

The American Cancer Society has developed consumer-friendly resources to use as handouts for patients and caregivers that explain the nutrition and physical activity guideline for cancer survivors. Included are commonly-asked questions and a reproducible version of the recommendations. Additionally, links to more information and resources are provided to help encourage and guide people with cancer to live well during and after cancer treatment.
